Payroll update 6 May 2026

News for School Payroll Staff

Kia ora koutou,

We’re sending you an extra newsletter this week with some more information about changes we’re implementing in this pay period.

Updating provisional payroll data after confirmed 1 March rolls

Principals’ pay rates

Now that the Ministry have confirmed schools’ rolls on 1 March, we will adjust pay rates for principals in pay period 03, pay day 12 May 2026.

Māori and Pacific teaching immersion levels

Māori and Pacific teaching immersion levels have been updated based on schools’ confirmed rolls. Eligible schools can apply for allowances in EdPay.

Background

In September each year the Ministry tells schools their staffing and funding entitlements for the following year based on their provisional roll. Education Payroll uses the provisional data for:

  • principals’ pay, and
  • allowances for Māori and Pacific teaching immersion levels.

In March each year, the Ministry confirms schools’ actual rolls on 1 March.  We then update our payroll data and adjust pay rates and allowances as required.

Temporary increase to transport allowance for relieving teachers

Due to the rise in fuel prices, the transport allowance has temporarily increased for relieving teachers (DDR jobs under the awards codes SDR5, PDR5 and ADR5). The rates will increase to:

  • 83c per kilometre for cars, and
  • 31c per kilometre for motorcycles.

This change is effective from 20 April 2026 and may continue for up to 12 months.
Schools and teachers do not need to do anything for this change. Education Payroll will update the rates in our system and the allowance will still be charged to Operational Funding.
