Payroll update 13 May 2025

News for School Payroll Staff

Kia ora koutou

In this update we're sharing an important message from the Ministry.

From 20 May, the Ministry of Education will start contacting former school employees owed an initial estimate payment towards Holidays Act arrears. These payments follow initial estimate payments made to current employees in 2023 and 2024.

Outreach to former employees owed initial estimate payments will be phased, starting with those owed most. Payments will begin in June and continue as the Ministry contacts former employees and confirms their details.

A small number of current employees (identified as former employees for previous initial estimate payments) will also receive a payment along with their normal pay on 10 June.

As with previous payroll remediation payments, no action is required from schools. There will be no impact on your school budget and the payments will not appear on your Staff Usage and Expenditure (SUE) report or other school documentation.

You can find details about the payments on the Ministry’sEducation Workforce website.

If you receive any queries from current or former employees, please pass them onto the Ministry’s dedicated query management team. Anyone with questions can get in touch by:
